We can offer 1-day introductions to 5-day in-depth courses. Here is some examples of what can be covered. All our courses are flexible and will take into account your individual aims and of course depend on weather conditions.

2-Day Course: We can introduce central themes required to move about the mountains in winter. We would look at use of axe and crampons; basic winter navigation; basic avalanche and weather awareness. Here are some of the skills that can be covered;

Personal kit – selecting and organisation

Movement skills on snow – kicking steps, self-belay, cutting steps, use of the ice axe for walking, and self-arrest, use of crampons in ascent/descent

Emergency procedures

Avalanche awareness – choosing safe routes

Winter navigation

5-day course: Over a 5 day course we aim to develop your practical knowledge of some of the techniques required to move about the mountains in winter safely and confidently. We would look at navigation in poor visibility, route choice, use of ice axe and crampons, emergency procedures, avalanche and weather awareness and equipment advice. The above skills will be covered and for those with previous experience of winter mountaineering who would like to build on this we can offer navigating at night, snow shelters and avalanche awareness. Here are some of the skills that can be covered;
